Photo 7 -The Practical Skills Classroom

This is the classroom that has traditionally been the learning environment for  theory for the face to face students. To the left is the hallway you see in previous Photo (2) and to the right is a door that goes outside to the fenced area you see in Photo (1).

From this year we began using this classroom as a dedicated Play Session environment and removed all the desks and chairs. Each Friday morning children from local centres either walk with their educators or catch a bus with their educators to attend a play session which is facilitated by the Full Time face to face students.

On the days prior to the Play Session the students are responsible for planning the program of provocations that they will provide for the children who are attending, based on the children's interests and observations that they have made on the children in the previous weeks.

This does not show the classroom 'set up' - but ready to be set up later in the week. Although not a purpose built environment - the teachers and students are able to make it a warm and welcoming environment.

Thanks for reading my posts - looking forward to reading and commenting on yours. Please feel free to ask me any questions .....

Now....... how do I navigate my way out of this....... and find my way back in again :)

  1. Hallo! It was very interesting to hear that you bring the children to the school. In that way the students really get a lot of practise to lead activities with children. We usually do the opposite. Students on children and Recreation program has work experience at a nursery school and get there to practice to implement activities with preschoolers.
I think we can learn a lot from you!

  4. The minimum requirement is a 6 month full time or 12 month part time course at a VET institution to be an assistant - but to be a room leader is either 2 years full time or 4 years full time at a university to be a TEACHER .

    1. They get a certificate III which is the minimum qualification to work with children.

They can then go on to a further 18 months of full time study to gain their Diploma and then they can go to university to train to be a qualified teacher.

The CERT III is the entry level legal requirement .
all people who work with children under 5 in Australia MUST have a cert III qualification by 2014 .
